159. Europe Bicycle Trip--Still Touring the Old City of Heidelberg

I continued my walking tour following the guide map and reading about the sites in the pamphlet. I wished that I knew more about history!
Karlsplatz- The square is named after Grand Duke Karl Friedrich von Baden and is on the site of the old Franciscan monastery that was demolished in 1803. This square offers a stunning view of the Heidelberg castle. The square is bordered by Institute of Science |(Akademie der Wissenschaft) , the Mittermaierhaus and the Palais Boisseree.

I
Collegium Academicum- Jesuit seminary built in 1750 , now houses university administration.
Jesuitenkirche with former Jesuitenkolleg- Beginning in 1712, construction of the three-nave hall church in Baroque style took 150 years.
Meder'sches \Haus- Sumptuously decorated 18th century mansion with Madonna and Holy Trinity
Close up of the Madonna
Haus zum Ritter- The Knight's house was the only mansion to survive Heidelberg's destruction in 1689-1693. Since 1705 a tavern and today a hotel and restaurant.
Marktplatz with Herkulesbrunnen and Rathaus- The town hall behind me took on it's present form in 1701. Bell ringing takes place daily just before 12:00 am, 4:00 and 7:00 pm.
Heiliggeistkirche- Church of the Holy Spirit-The church was built between 1398 and 1441.

Palais Weimar- Built in the 18th century, now the Volkerkunde-museum houses the ethnological collections of the von Portheim Foundation.
Hans Buhl - Society house of the university
Karlstor-  Triumphal arch erected between 1775 and 1781 based on plans by Nicolas de Pipage in honour of Elector Karl Theodor, in neoclassical style.
The underside of the arch.
Kornmarkt- Former specialty market, here stands the baroqus statue of the Madonna created by Peter von den Branden in 1718. Immediately adjacent is the Palais Graimberg named after the castle's guardian.  Now I was headed up the hill to explore the castle (schloss). -left top
