118. Europe Bicycle Trip--The Transformation of an 1860 Schoolhouse

Today is Day 42, Wednesday, May 28th. Another goodbye to Ome Jan and Tante Betty who are expecting Carola and Richard soon. I bicycled the 33 km to Westerdorp in a steady drizzle and did not take any photos so I could keep the camera and case dry.

This was the address of the house of Majde van Dalen. It was built in1860 and was originally a two room schoolhouse. Later it was a grocery store with a post office on one side. The back room was to receive parcels.A steam tram used to run in front of the house back then.
The house from the other side-the entrance to the store was on this side.
A drawing depicting the home a long time ago.
A photo of the grocer behind his counter.
Majda is a dynamic lady full of energy. She and her husband have lived in Venezuela for 12 years and had a book and stationary business. They bought furniture in Columbia and crated it and brought it back to the Netherlands. Her husband had a muscular larynx disease and had to have a stomach tube for food intake. He was sick for 12 years and passed away in 2005 at the age of 72. Majda has 4 children and 6 grandchildren.
This schoolroom is now a dining room where I found Majda and her friends playing cards on this rainy day.
The other school room is now a living room.
.
majda is exceptional at doing mosaic work!
These are all samples in the former parcel room where Silver was parked.
