Day 65-Goodbye Nova Scotia (for a while) Hello Newfoundland

Day 65 Monday, July12, 2010 Distance 9.35 km. Time 39 min. Total so far 4455.79 km. It was a rough night for me as I woke up at 11:30 pm. , 3:30 am. and then at 4:40 am. when we stayed up. It was great to be getting ready inside as it was very windy and rainy outside. On the way to the ferry it subsided to a drizzle. and we saw all the vehicles that had just disembarked. I pulled my bicycle right into the waiting terminal but the security man asked us to leave it in the entrance door foyer where they still stayed dry. The wait wasn't too long and then we were asked to go on. We were on level 3 on the ferry called MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood and took quite a while to tie up the bicycles securely. Then we found a cozy corner on level 5 with a table and a view of the TV screen. I took a quick tour and took some photos. We did some work on the computer, ate the sandwiches we had made and chatted with our neighbour, Dennis, who is taking his family and grandson to show them Newfoundland where he grew up. He joked that he was a descendant of Lief Erickson. He gave many tourists around him good advice for their trips. He used to fly and had a big part in making the memorial at Gander for the military aircraft that went down in 1985. Also in his past, he was a pilot for forest fire fighting. The crossing was quite calm even with the winds. There were no whale sightings and as we got closer to land it became very foggy so my first photos of land don't show very much. We were the last ones to leave the ferry so that we wouldn't get run down especially by the giant motor homes, towing vehicles. I hope we don't get cancer from all the fumes! I don't know how the workers put up with that on a daily basis. In a foggy drizzle , we proceeded to the town. Since we heard the winds were going to be about 80 % in the first dangerous stretch called Wreck Cove and the rain increased, we got a room at Hotel Port aux Basques. We walked the short distance to the grocery store in our rain gear and everyone always stares at mine. Loaded up with food , we returned and asked for another room as the bed zagged big time. In a new room with 2 beds , we both had long afternoon naps. I slept really deep and didn't even want to wake up for supper but forced myself to do so. I want to be able to sleep tonight also. We're praying for good weather and fair winds behind us to move toward Cornerbrook toomorrow.
