Day 54-Happy Canada Day-Visit to Peggy's Cove

Day 54 Thursday, July 1,2010 Happy Canada Day! Jim made the bacon and Dave cooked the eggs for our filling breakfast. I did one blog and then spent the morning looking at Adrienne's sewing machines, fabrics, and handicrafts. She is very talented and has all the equipment to work with. Then she and I went to the fish store to buy the fresh haddock for supper. We talked with Gloria whose whole family has stayed local but work hard to make livings. Then we all packed into their van and with Adrienne driving and Jim giving occasional tips to keep her eyes on the road, we headed towards Peggy's Cove. We passed Queensland beach where their daughter, Bridget, first swam. Jim says some of the storms move the rocks right out onto the road. He says the popularity of sailing is increasing over yachting due to the price of gas. There are lots of little coves with fishing shantys where the fishermen repair their nets and boats and where they have a little stove and share some rum with their friends in the winter. We came to the memorial for the victims of the Swiss Air airplane accident. On September 2, 1998, 229 people died in the crash. Jim says most folks think it was due to pilot error as he did not declare an emergency when approaching the Halifax airport so they sent him around again. It had taken off in New York and was heading overseas. A little farther down the road was Peggy's Cove, a beautiful little village but with way too many tourists. They were like ants on all the rocks. We had trouble finding parking. Years ago, Adrienne almost bought a house there. We returned home and had a delicious supper of haddock with sauce, steamed rice and broccoli. I did one more blog and we had a nice visit together in the evening. Thank you Jim and Adrienne for your hospitality!!
