Day 57- Seven hills and Happy 1st Birthday to Kate and Izzy

Day 57 Sunday, July 4, 2010 Distance 103.32 km. Time 5 hr. 18 min. Total so far 4029.40 km. There were lots of black flies as we were getting ready to leave. We finished off the back roads today and came to Westville, where we had a muffin at Tim Horton's. Then we proceeded to New Glasgow where it was very windy but warm. After a stop at Walmart and Canadian tire for our fuel, called Heet, we went on Hwy 104 which was very busy but since we wanted to make some distance we were willing to put up with the traffic. There is a side edge but the problem comes when there is an uphill and it becomes two lanes but the side edge completely disappears and we are left to forge for ourselves with the vehicles in the slow lane. Whoever made these highways did not ride a bicycle. We passed the French River and the Barney River and during that time Dave says we did seven major, long hills. I was too busy climbing to count. During that time, Dave rode for a while on the new divided highway they are trying to build. At first I didn't join him as it was too gravelly but then it was black top and we stayed on it ALL ALONE until we came to the end where they are chewing away the hill. Finally we went off the main Hwy to Hwy 4 to find a campground. What a change - nice and quiet. However, there was no campground and we landed up back on the main highway to come into Antigonish where St. Francis Xavier University is located. We found Whidden Park campground and it even charges by the person for bicyclists and then you still have to pay for a shower. All day long my mind was on my little granddaughters in Ontario who are celebrating their first birthday today. Kate and Izzy were born premature last July 4th and I helped my daughter, Melissa, with them for three months. I called and sang Happy Birthday and told them both "Gramma loves you"!
