Day 42-Thank you Jon and Cheryl- Escorted back on the road again

Day 42 Saturday, June 19, 2010 Distance 93.48 km. Time 5 hr. 28 min. Total so far 2824.87 km. Elevation climb 9015 ft. I woke up early and finished a blog before the breakfast of boiled eggs, sausage patties, toast and cereal that Jon and Cheryl had prepared. They have certainly fed us well so we will have lots of energy for a while. We thanked them for the lovely visit to their home and family in Madison and for the wonderful tours that they took us on. Anna Marie and Brianna had their bicycles ready and after a few photos they were allowed to escort us down the street. Not only did we have their escort but just around the corner were the Madison police car and a whole bunch of bicyclists participating in the three day trek across Maine to raise money for a charity. For most of the way down Hwy 201, we were passed by them and several slowed down to ask us about our trip. What a sendoff from the Madison area. Instead of going right back to Hwy 2, Dave took River Road which followed along the Kennebec river. At Skowhegan, we returned to Hwy 2. There we took photos of the huge Skowhegan Indian made by sculptor, Bernard Langlais. At Canaan, we again saw the big direction sign for many places. When we stopped in Palmyra for a drink it was 92 degrees in the shade so it was very important to stay hydrated. In Newport at Walmart, we met Jim and Mari. Jim is originally from Flint, Michigan and Mari hails from Maine. Jim used to do lots of bicycle trips in Upper Michigan. They were headed out with their kayaks and I would have loved to join them. In the afternoon we passed Etna, Damascus, Carmel and then Hermon. I think each one had a mountain as we climbed all day. Finally just before Bangor, we saw Wheeler Stream campground and stayed there. I was too tired to enjoy the pool and settled for a nice shower.
