Day 36-Goodbye Vermont-Hello New Hampshire

Day 36 Sunday, June 13, 2010 Distance 70.58 km. Time 4 hr. 36 min. Total so far 2530.50 km Elevation climb 8192 ft. After returning a pair of men's underwear that got mixed in with ours to the laundromat, we crossed the Connecticut River into New Hampshire. We headed to the Walmart Superstore in Woodsville and bought our breakfast of an orange, yogurt, a banana and some muffins, and bought lunch supplies. Lunch lately has been a very thin sandwich thin with peanut butter, cheese slices and precooked bacon. That's how we get the energy we need. Supper is a Lipton type rice package and tuna in a bag. We are still on Hwy 302 and today the Ammonoosuc River goes along the road. Very Pretty! We went through a little place called Bath which has a very long covered bridge and old general store. Then we stopped for a snack at Lisbon where we met some cyclists out for a ride. A little ways down the road Mark came up to us on his bicycle while out training. He is a lawyer and his wife is an elementary school principal and former co-owner of a bicycle store. They have done lots of touring down south and in Europe. He took us off Hwy 302 and led us for a tour on a back country road that would save us going past Littleton. There was one major section of hill but we made it up. The views were beautiful but Silver and I didn't like the bumps. If we have too many bumps in the day, my neck and right arm get sore and I have to take Advil to help me sleep. We parted ways near the end of the road and a little later met Hyde out for a walk. He is Scottish and lives on this country road near the interstate 93 exchange near Franconia. We returned to Hwy 302 but our original plan of taking Hwy 116 was now changed. The towns here put up signs about 10 miles out. We climbed a humongous, long, hill and three town signs before we made it up and over part of Mount Agassiz to Bethlehem. We had lunch by the visitor center, filled our water bottles and headed on for more scenic views , climbs and descents to Twin Mountains and Hwy 3. At Carroll where we turned to Hwy 115, we stopped at two campgrounds but they charged too much. We think anything over 20 dollars for a tiny tent and two bicycles is way too much. We checked out a few places off the road that weren't suitable and then we went around a corner and saw a beautiful big field of grass and wild flowers and 100 yards back a clump of trees that we could camp behind. The view behind the trees was of Mount Martha. Gorgeous. We put up the tent and thanked the Lord for this beautiful mountain field. However, later we found that we had to share this place with a number of wood ticks and some mosquitoes. Dave says the mosquitoes' job is to distract us while the ticks do their work. We had to do a good check of everything and even then we found a few more later on. They stick like GLUE!
