Day 41- Swimming in the Atlantic Ocean !!!

Day 41 Friday, June 18, 2010 Jon made us a nice scrambled egg and toasted bagel breakfast and then we all filled their van for our day excursion to Bar Harbour. Bar Harbour is the most eastern part where bicycle tourers that started in Washington dip their wheels in the ocean to finish their west-east treks. We got out at Skowhegan to view the big dam and walk over the walking bridge which was swept away by a flood a few years ago. That is hard to believe when you see the water so far down. At Canaan, Dave jumped out and took a photo of the sign with various towns and distances. At Fort Knox, we all got out for a break and viewed the beautiful Penobscot bridge and Observatory over the Penobscot River. Cheryl and I took turns sitting in the back between the twins. I had packed a bag with books and toys to entertain them. At one stand, Jon stopped and bought two containers of strawberries and we wolfed them down. We passed through Ellsworth and Trenton where Cheryl used to teach and live before her marriage. Finally we came to Mount Desert Island which is home to Acadia National Park. We saw many sections where the tide was out and it was all rock or mud. We rode around on the Loop Road to Sand Beach where we were very lucky to get a parking spot. The beach was crowded as it was a very hot day and there were tour buses and school groups. Well, Anna Marie, Brianna and I ran for the water. It was ICE COLD! But they are tough and so am I and we ran in and out many times and the girls put their whole body down in it. The waves were awesome but I could feel the pull of the water back to the ocean. After a long time, we changed and went up the road farther to Thunder Hole. Here we had the lunch Jon had prepared- lobster salad sandwiches, carrots, chips and cheeses and cherries. We then went down to the water and took several pictures. Poor Brianna fell and scraped her knee and hand as she was running toward me. Jon then took us up to Cadillac Summit which is up, up and up at 1530 ft. What a beautiful view we had from there. My camera is not sufficient to show it. Poor Brianna had another fall there and just wanted to go home. We headed to the village of Bar Harbour for an ice cream cone but it was too busy to find a parking spot so we drove off the island and got a real nice ice cream a little farther up the road. Later we had Chinese buffet for supper in Newport and arrived home around 8 pm. A few phone calls later we were ready for bed.
