Day 38-Logging trucks and black flies-Baseball fields and Megan

Day 38 Tuesday, June 15, 2010 Distance 88.60 km. Time 4 hr. 48 min. Total so far 2692.23 km
Elevation climb 8000 ft. After eating the other half dozen eggs for breakfast, we thanked Irene for her hospitality and headed for the uphills. We passed Hanover, a sign that said "In the woods is Perpetual Youth" and a little store called Gordie Howe's. The logging trucks have been roaring past us for the last few days and when we stop, we experience the black flies. I got a last nice photo of the Androscoggin River. Dave was ahead so I couldn't be in it. We entered the River Valley and came to Boivin Park where there was a huge lumberjack and a dam. Shortly after we went past the huge pulp and paper mill in Rumford. I couldn't take photos as the bridge was too narrow and busy but we saw a big semi truck lifted vertical into the air to empty it. After Wilton, we passed a windmill ice cream store but it's not warm enough for that treat. Going through Farmington was a chore as we had to stay in the right car lane ad one angry driver honked in a rude way at me when he was held back for a while. At Farmington Halls, we rounded a corner and there before us was a baseball field and an empty big canopy and no signs. It was like the Lord saying, "Here is a place for you for tonight." We set up and even got to watch a baseball practice that evening. Megan, one of the coaches wives, talked to us for awhile . The team of 13 year olds is heading to the playoffs next. She says most folks that live here either work for the paper mills or the hospital. She travels two hours away for a 24 hour shift caring for someone and then travels from there a lot to their camp off of Hwy 9. Maybe we will pass her later when we go that way next week.
