air)

Day 44 Monday, June 21, 2010 Distance 90.53 km. Time 5 hr. 11 min. Total so far 2990.51 km. Elevation climb 6185 ft. Today is the first day of summer. It seems like we have packed in a lot this spring. We got up early and were in the restaurant when it opened at 6 am to use the internet and have an omelette as there are no grocery stores coming up today and we need energy. It was another hot day but lovely with a slight breeze and a beautiful sky. We passed a few buildings that made up Beddington. All these places are very small with many closed and empty. After an hour and twenty minutes, we came to the Machias river that Jennifer had suggested. After many long climbs, there, at a very high elevation was a fire tower and fields of blueberries. We met two motorcyclists there who are also going to the Maritimes and Newfoundland. Maybe we will run into them again. We brought our peanut butter and lettuce sandwiches into the Hilltop Diner and ordered drinks and fries to go with them. Later, in Alexander, we passed a tractor and farm equipment museum. Finally, after Baileyville and the village of Woodland, we arrived at Hwy 1. We passed the Moosehorn National Wildlife refuge and entered Calais, the last American city before the border to Canada. We asked directions to a motel and ran into Jay. Jay was in the navy and wanted to see the world but all he saw was the deck of the ship so when he left the navy he bicycled 6ooo miles in Europe staying at hostels and friends and just carrying a backpack on his back. We made it to the Calais Motor Inn (the pool is closed for rep and dried out our wet tent in the parking lot and called the parents of Jill from the YMCA. We will visit them tomorrow.
