Day 43-Highway 9-Long, gradual hills

Day 43 Sunday, June 20, 2010 Distance 75.11 km. Time 4 hr. 39 min. Total so far 2899.98 km. We are becoming early risers again. We were on the road at 7:30 and almost immediately in the outskirts of Bangor. Dave had us skirt around most of it and soon we were over the Penobscot River and into the city of Brewer. We found a grocery store that was open and bought some food and two cards. We mailed one back to Cheryl's in Madison and one to Wisconsin for Andy and Caroline's anniversary which is coming up soon. Today we had lots and lots of LONG uphills where gear 1 was necessary. After one long one in Amherst where Hwy 181 meets Hwy 9, I spied two white rocking chairs at the store. We sat there for our lunch. My legs sure needed that rest. We took a water break where Hwy 179 meets Hwy 9 and there we met Jessica and Steven who had their Toyota van loaded with a big and small kayak and two bicycles on the back. We have seen more mobile homes and vehicles with boats the last couple of days to indicate that summer vacationers will soon fill the roads. Jessica told us about a free campground up the road by the Machias River but Dave said we would never get that far and he was right. We were zapped, the sky was darkening so we were happy to find a store beside the highway just before Beddington that had a few camping spots. Thank you, Lord! We set up the tent, had a quick shower and then it thundered and downpoured three times. Since the camping was very cheap we decided to eat in the restaurant and use internet until 6 o'clock when they closed. It was an early to bed night after all the rain stopped.
