62. Europe Bicycle Trip--Day 21--Alphen aan de Rijn to Leiden--Barges

A barge-a good way to tour
Bicycle coming off a barge
Today, Wednesday, May 7th , marks the beginning of the third part of my trip. Part 1 was with Sarah and Dane touring , Part 2 was in the caravan learning knooppunten with Ome Jan and Tante Betty and now Part 3 will be my clockwise circle tour of the Netherlands also visiting relatives and contacts along the way. My final destination today will be Oegstgeest.
A pretty tunnel
The bicycle paths go right under the buildings.
There is also industry along the canals.
An old farm building
The building has a double roof.
A line of pruned trees
A beautiful yellow tree
The towns in the distance can be spotted by the church towers.
This was a bridge built in 1887.
I met "wandeler" walker Mary Ann (we share the same name), who is training for a long walk later this year in the east of the country.
This church roof has many hooks on it. i think that is to hold planks for when they must reroof.
A war monument in Leiden. This was built to protect the city from attacks by the Spaniards.
People pass through the monument to go to the inner city.
I met these lovely folks from Nova Scotia, Canada who are on a barge trip.
Very modern buildings
Wil saw my Canadian flag and will be going to Canada in a couple months. he led me through the city.
